BELIZE CELEBRATES WORLD HEALTH DAY Apr 19, 2012

 

Belize celebrated World Health Day today. The Pan American Health Organization, Ministry of Health and the National Council on Ageing hosted activities at the Radisson Fort George Hotel in Belize City.  This year focuses on the elderly with the theme Good health adds life to years.  Love News spoke with the Country representative for PAHO, Dr. Gerardo de Cosio who told us that PAHO has been in existence for one hundred and ten years and the celebration of World Health Day dates back to the beginning of the World Health Organization in 1948 and the main aim of World Health Day is to show people that without good health, life cannot exist. De Cosio mentioned during his remarks at  the ceremony today, that on a worldwide scale, the proportion of older people in the total population is increasing at more than three times the overall population growth rate and that populations are ageing faster in low and middle-income countries.  In his keynote address, the Minister of Health, Pablo Marin said that today’s focus is how good health throughout life can help men and women live full and productive lives and be a resource for their families and communities. There was the presentation of awards to people who have contributed to the community in the area of health.  Informative sessions on topics like Hygiene and Safety Care tips, benefits of check up, health and nutrition and exercises were also held.
