A Belize City man was wounded by police this morning during a shoot-out. The incident happened around 9:40 in the Banak Street area. Police press officer Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood says police were on mobile patrol when they intercepted he suspect on Mosul Street.
FITZROY YEARWOOD, Inspector of Police
“They attempted to stop a grey Toyota car. The occupants of this car instead the driver then accelerated and they drove into Magazine Road where they stopped the car on Banak Street. One of the men exited the vehicle and opened fire on the police and the police return fire hitting him in the right shoulder. The other occupants of the vehicle were detained and escorted to CIB Office. The person that was injured, I have been informed, that his name is Al Young Jones. He is twenty two years old and he is presently under police guard at the KHMH receiving medical attention.”
PATRICK JONES, Reporter
“I understand a relative of his is now also in police detention.”
FITZROY YEARWOOD, Inspector of Police
“Yea. We have one Patrick Jones detained, a senior citizen, I will not release his name as yet. That person was in that vehicle and he is believed to be a handicap.”
PATRICK JONES, Reporter
“Any idea why the person fled from police?”
FITZROY YEARWOOD, Inspector of Police
“Well Patrick, police recovered a glock nine millimetre from the scene I believe that they realized they would have been caught with that weapon so they tried to make good their escape but this weas a bad day for them.”
PATRICK JONES, Reporter
“As is normally the case when an officer shoots and injures a suspect the police would instigate an investigation.”
FITZROY YEARWOOD, Inspector of Police
“Yea, we have commenced a criminal investigation into this matter and an internal investigation but Patrick from what we are gathering so far this is a clear case of protecting yourself as an officer and to help top it off we found a weapon that we believe was used by the occupants of that vehicle.”
In addition to Al Jones, police have also detained nineteen year old Taylor’s Alley resident Patrick Jones pending the outcome of their investigation.
