Activities for police week continue today with an open day in Belize City. The event is being staged at the Queen Street police station where various sections of the police department are giving primary school children a chance to see how law enforcement authorities carry out their duties. Assistant Superintendent of Police Dianne Hall is the coordinator of today’s event and she told Love News that this is a good way to forge a closer working relationship with the public.

“And also we have invited the schools and the committee to come and see what we have out here.”

“What is the overall objective of putting on this display for the public today?”
DIANNE HALL, Asst. Supt. of Police
“It is to educate the public on what the police do and also to let them have an awareness and let the students come around and see what we have to offer.”

“Is this a part of trying to forge a closer relationship with the community?
DIANNE HALL, Asst. Supt. of Police
“Yes it is, like our theme for this year is Let’s Unite and Continue to Make Belize Safer.”

“Now based on the comment you have been getting from the children. Are they happy that you opened up your doors, so to speak, for them?”
DIANNE HALL, Asst. Supt. of Police
“Yes, I think they are happy because we have more to display than the previous years especially patrol branch and we also invited the BTB to be here and we also have a doctor and a nurse to check your pressure and your diabetes.”

“Now I noticed that in one of the displays which seemed to be the most popular ones. You’re showing them about and teaching them about gun and the dangers of guns.”
DIANNE HALL, Asst. Supt. of Police
“Yes, we have the Anti-drug Unit out hear telling them about drugs and the danger and we have community policing boot which also have different firearms and the danger and explain to the children the danger of using the firearm.”

“This is Police Week we know. What message do you have for people watching and listening via radio and television so far as police and the important role that they play in helping to fight crime?”
DIANNE HALL, Asst. Supt. of Police
“I just want to encourage the people to continue to work with us. We know in any organization we have a few that does things that they are not supposed to do, you know, but we need the help of the public. So we urge them to continue to work with us. As you are aware the crime situation, sometimes seem to goes up and sometimes it goes down but we need the help to solve these crime. So I want to urge them to continue work with us and help us in any way they can.”
The police open day continues until mid-afternoon.
