“It is very good that through the cooperation and generosity of Taiwan we have a camp such as this where many of our young people can have an opportunity to be positively engaged for at least two weeks out of their summer.  In a time when much focus seems to be on negative things that are associated with some of our young people it is indeed refreshing to have opportunities such as this.  Opportunities as this provide for young people chance to learn new skills, to meet new friends, especially, Taiwanese friends and to learn about another culture.  Indeed it is through activities such as this that long lasting friendships are established between citizens of both our countries and this serves to cement and strengthen our good international relations even more.”

Leacock extended thanks to the Government of Taiwan for their continued friendship and generosity to Belize.  Ambassador of Taiwan to Belize, David Wu said during his remarks that the one of the first things the youth ambassadors should learn is Belize’s National Anthem because the lyrics speak greatly about culture

DAVID WU, Ambassador of Taiwan to Belize

“Culture here is more than Just a way of living.  Culture here is actually an accumulation of wisdom and experience for their people living in specific country.  They are accumulate this experience and wisdom from generation to generation and so that is our purpose, to send our youth ambassador from Taiwan to of which Belize is one our best to interact with the youths of the local communities.  We are not only here to teach magic or choreography or Mandarin or whatever subjects, we are talented but we are also here to learn the different way of living, the different cultures shown by the youths of the local communities .  So this year is a certain year of succession that my country, Taiwan the Republic of China, we successfully send this international youth ambassador to Belize and I assure you that for the past of two years when our youth ambassadors return to Taiwan, they either wrote me though email or they show the photograph they took in Belize on the Facebook and they were so excited when they returned to Taiwan, even after one year they return to Belize.  So I believe that this year again our youth ambassadors from Taiwan when they complete their mission here in Belize, when they return to Taiwan their experience, their life would be fully enriched from the different cultures and the different thinking, the way of living from their counter parts also the youth ambassadors of Belize.”

Also present at this morning’s opening was Governor General of Belize, Sir Colville Young, and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Attorney General of Belize, Wilfred Elrington, A closing ceremony will be held on the twenty seventh of July at seven pm and the public in general is invited to attend and witness the farewell performance.
