Jul 20, 2012
A summer camp hosted by the Belize Red Cross at St. John Vianney School in Belize City. Field officer for strenghting resilience in urban youths through education, Evelyn Landaverry, spoke to Love News about the camp
EVELYN LANDAVERRY, Field Officer
“The main objective of the program is first to give children a space or venue where children would be able to express themselves and at the same time to learn. So it was mostly gearing towards having fun and also learning. They learn first aid, they learn psychosocial, they learn what are emotions, how to deal with emotions. They also had a lot of sessions with creativity, dancing, acting also what are some fundamental principles, the values, why are values important and those were the main emphasis of the entire summer camp. The theme for the summer camp is children as agents of behavior change and we have the age group that we used for the summer camp it’s 9 to 12. So far it has been very warm.”

“And who are the facilitators?”
EVELYN LANDAVERRY, Field Officer
“We had three of the facilitators. We have three ladies from the River Valley who works with the protected schools last year. We did it- schools for four primary schools in Belize City and those were the same facilitators that are actually assisting us for the summer camp, we have Ms. Mildred Ortiz, Ms. August and Ms. Denise. Thanks to the support from the Jane Usher community, they really did their best. We saw great commitments from the parents also from the children. The children really had awesome time so I would like to extend a heart full thank you to all the CDRT which are the Community Disaster Response Team from Jane Usher and to Red Cross volunteers and other community members that strongly supported this event.”
Landaverry says she is also grateful for the cooperation of the principal of St. John Vianney School. A closing ceremony was held this morning at St. John Vianney where a variety of awards were presented to the participants.
