SAN PEDRO ROMAN CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL OPENS NEWLY BUILT CLASSROOM FOR STUDENTS
Jul 27, 2012
Placement of students in schools around the country has always been a challenge with the demands of a growing population. In San Pedro, there are at least fifty-seven students who are out of school, not for the summer holidays, but because there simply is no space for them, will now have the chance come this September to sit in newly-built classrooms. The accomplishment, according to San Pedro Town Mayor, Daniel Guerrero, comes through a joint community effort, involving the San Pedro Town Council, San Pedro Roman Catholic Primary School, and an unnamed “Good Samaritan”.

“We knew the problem was coming and since we came to office we have been visiting schools. We are helping all the schools on the island and thank God we have a good donor for this, a good sponsor, we can’t mention his name but the Council have been working very hard. We managed to get three new classes, a new shed, a new bathroom and we’re going to paint all the building all outside and inside, fix all the fixture, light fans everything you name it. It’s good, it came on a perfect time and right now at this present day I am working with another person to see if we can manage to get two new more classes for New Horizon and that’s what we’re doing right now for San Pedro.”
San Pedro’s Education Officer, Miriam Pott, says that the construction of the classrooms was a dream that was answered in just a beckon call.

“At the end of the summer we should be seeing structure instead of just the foundation being started.”

“And it’s a wish list because how many children are out of school?”
MIRIAM POTT, Education Officer (San Pedro Town)
“We have almost about 60 children on the streets out of school who have no place to go and so this would be a big help. Two of the classrooms are for those children and one classroom is to accommodate double classroom that they have sharing one classroom space. So as you will note out here it is the evidence that the San Pedraños have come up with their level of commitment, it has risen to the need of education.”
The construction of the wooden classrooms comes at a cost of around a hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
