Slovakian Businessman Released on Bail

Forty-two year old Karol Mello, a businessman from Slovakia who was remanded into custody after he was charged with uttering on a false document and perjury, was released on a bail of $10,000.00 today after he was offered bail by Justice Denis Hanomansingh. The bail, two sureties of $5,000.00 each, was offered after Mello’s attorney, Andrew Marshalleck, who held brief for attorney Godfrey Smith, submitted that one of the charges against Mello is statute barred and the other is not perjury. Marshalleck also submitted that Mello is not a flight risk because he has moved his family to San Pedro and he has formed a local company and has leased a property. Marshalleck also said that Mello has a work permit and he has a Belizean born child who is attending pre-school. The bail was offered on the condition that Mello report to San Pedro Police Station every Friday and that he attends Belmopan Magistrate’s Court on Monday, August 20 and on every other adjourned date until the matter is concluded. Mello must also surrender all his travel documents and he must get leave from the Supreme Court before he can travel. In addition to that, a copy of the bail order must be served to the Chief Magistrate.
