Friday, October 5 ------- Cayo Residents Plan Demonstration
Oct 08, 2012
Residents of the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena will hold a huge demonstration on Monday. According to organizers, the shutdown of businesses on Monday is designed to protest the increase of crime in the area.
A call has been made for all of the Cayo district, including Benque Viejo del Carmen and surrounding villages to join in the shutdown, which is due to begin at dawn on Monday. Organizers of the event are hoping that it will sent a strong message to government to implement urgent measures to ensure citizens safety in light of a spike in violent crimes in the Cayo district.
In less than a month’s time, two young people, both students of the University of Belize were brutally murdered. The latest victim, twenty one year old Suzenne Martinez was laid to rest on Friday afternoon.
Following her funeral, there was a candlelight vigil held at the Colombus Park. As part of the lead up to Monday’s planned shutdown, a meeting is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at the Sacred Heart primary school to discuss the action plan for the shutdown.
Love FM and Love Television will have live coverage of Monday’s demonstration in Cayo.
