SPECIAL OLYMPIC BELIZE HOSTS TRAINING SEMINAR

October 08, 2009

Special Olympics Belize will conduct a three day ‘Train the Trainer’ seminar for football coaches and trainers. The training will be held this weekend at the Stella Maris School and National Resource Center for Inclusive Education building on Freetown Road. Love News spoke to Special Olympics Board Member Myrna Elliot.

Myrna Elliot: Board Member, Special Olympics

“The training entails practical and theory and it will be held at the NARCIE building; that is the old special education unit. There are two trainers who did training in the Caribbean and they will be imparting their knowledge that they gained to coaches countrywide; those who are interested. The practical sessions will be held at the MCC Ground and the theory part will be at the NARCIE building. Andy Aspinall is the main coordinator, assisted by Raymond Sanchez. They are the two persons who will be doing the training for the courses. When they are finished training the coaches are expected to go back to their districts and impart what they have learnt. We do not want it to die a natural death.”

This will be Special Olympics’ first football program and Elliot says that they hope that it will attract more fans and athletes to participate in the movement.

Myrna Elliot: Board Member, Special Olympics

“Some of the athletes who are not taking part in any kind of activities will get a chance to take part in the football activities. The football skills that will be passed on will allow them a chance. Some of them are already doing basketball, track and field so the other children that are not part in those will get a chance to take part in the football games. It will help them to be able to go into the regular setting and be able to compete with the regular students. They are doing it already but after this training they will go by all the rules and regulations of the game. So it is a chance for those who are not taking part in other activities to train and possibly compete internationally.”

The seminar will commence tomorrow and will run until Sunday.
