During its regular session today Cabinet agreed that Belize join the Latin American Energy Organization, OLADE. OLADE is an inter-governmental agency that contributes to the integration, sustainable development and energy security of the region. Presently seven CARICOM states, six Central American countries, twelve countries in South America and Mexico are members of the organization. Cabinet was also briefed on a meeting held on Saturday between 100 gang members and the Ministers of Education, Human Development and Social Transformation and National Security. The meeting is a part of Government’s effort to come up with a holistic approach to the gang situation. Education Minister Patrick Faber informed Cabinet he held further meetings with the Belize National Teachers Union and the Chairperson of the Roman Catholic Bishop’s Commission. Minister Faber informed his colleagues that he agreed to a one month delay in taking the Education and Training Bill, 2009 to the House of Representatives during which time teachers will meet and Ministry of Education officials will be on hand to answer questions. Minister Faber also briefed Cabinet on the C-SEC and CAPE results. As we reported yesterday Athina Swasey, a graduate of E-P Yorke High School was the first place student in the May June 2009 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations. Stacy Grinage a graduate of Dt. John’s College Junior College is the most outstanding candidate in the May June 2009 Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations. Grinage is the recipient of the Belize Open Scholarship for 2009.
