A chopping incident on Garifuna Settlement day in Dangriga has left a man hospitalized in Belize City. The victim has been identified as Santiago Ciau, Junior. According to authorities, Ciau, Junior was chopped on his right hand, while standing in front of a Dangriga night club near the main bridge in the town. Police say their investigation has so far revealed that as Ciau, Junior stood in front of the establishment on St. Vincent Street, a man with a machete walked up to him and chopped him on his right hand. Ciau, Junior has subsequently been transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he is listed in a stable condition. Police in Dangriga have since detained a man, identified as Dorian Welcome, pending the conclusion of their investigation.

Two people in the Toledo district have been arrested and charged after separate police patrols on Wednesday led to the discovery of under a pound of marijuana combined. In the first instance, Emelio Esquivel, a resident of San Pedro Columbia village was charged with the offence of drug trafficking after he was found with just under a pound of weed. Police say that during a mobile patrol in the Magoon Area of Punta Gorda they stopped Esquivel and searched a knapsack that he was carrying where the weed was found. Another search, this time on Clement Street resulted in the discovery of about two ounces of marijuana. George Coc, also a resident of San Pedro Columbia village was subsequently arrested and charged for the offence of drug trafficking.

Police in Belmopan are investigating a shooting incident which has left one man injured.  Reports are that the incident happened late on Wednesday night and the victim has been identified as twenty two year old Justin Stuart. According to information to our News Centre, Stuart and another man were reportedly inside a bathroom at a sports bar in Las Flores village, when the shooting occurred. Stuart suffered a single gunshot wound to the upper right side of his chest.
