Youth Week 2009 came to a close on Saturday with a family fun day in the Cayo District and various sporting events in other parts of the country. The week of activity included information sessions, competitions and talk show appearances. One of the most anticipated events was the Youth Award which was held on Friday evening at the Biltmore Plaza. Joseph Card is the Development and Communication Manger at Youth for the Future.

"Youth for the Future, a Department of the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Information and Broadcasting, in celebration and observation of the National Youth Week 2009 requisitioned and accepted nominations for the Belize Youth Awards in ten categories . The Belize Youth Award acknowledges the achievement of exceptional young people countrywide. We recognize their contribution but the process culminated with an awards night held in grand fashion at the Belize Biltmore Plaza last Friday November 27. Nominees from all over the country had congregated witness and share in the celebration as they vied for the much honored Belize Youth Award. Present at the ceremony was the Minister of Youth, Sports, Information and Broadcasting, Elvin Penner and his Chief Executive Officer, the Minister of Education, Patrick Faber, Commissioner of police, Crispin Jeffries, Director of Sports, Anthony Michael and Director of Youth for the Future, Dianne Finnegan among many other invited guests."
Ten young people who went above and beyond to make a difference were awarded.

"The successful awardees for the Belize Youth Awards 2009 are as follows: the person who won the Youth Monisters Award was Ms. Eula Sabal of Dangriga Town. The young person who won the Pacesetter Award was Mr. Wilfred Garbutt of Rock Stone Pond. The person who won the Marion Jones Award was Mr. Ryan Simpson of eight miles on the Northern Highway. The person who won the Donovan Reneau Award was Marlon Rodriguez of Belize City and there are five other awards. The Karl H. Menzies Award was won by Andrea Palacio who owns Bell's Salon. The Beverly Smith Lopez Award was won by Alvin Ledlon of Belize City. The Doctor Arlie Petters Award was won by Ms. Karena Mahung of the Toledo District and the Environmental Award was won by Ms. Mercedes Requena of Caye Caulker. There was also the Sister Caritas Lawrence Award that was won by the Peer Helpers Group from Edward P. Yorke High School and the Youth Service Provider Award was won by the Belize Family Life Association. Mind you in all of these areas there were several young people and organizations nominated so they received recognition awards as well for their nomination."
The ten awardees received glass plaque sighed by Director of Youth for the Future Dianne Finnegan and Minister of Youth and Sports, Information and Broadcasting Elvin Penner.
