March 03, 2010
Four days after he was gunned down, the murder of twenty one year old Teddy Murrillo on Saturday morning continues to be the subject of much discussion. The family believes that the University of Belize student and a deacon in the Adventist Church was killed by a law enforcement officer. No motive for the killing has been identified, and the family remains at a loss as to why anyone might have wanted to kill Murrillo, who was not known to have had any run-ins with the police. Today, the Belize Union of Seventh Day Adventist Churches issued a press release saying that all schools under the Adventist management will be closed on Friday to express what they church calls, quote: “our indignation at the brutal and senseless murder of one of our young members, Teddy Roland Murrillo, Jr,” end of quote. The strongly worded release goes on to say that the Adventist Church, quote: laments, yet mourns with the Murrillo family at the loss of their loved one; nonetheless we take this opportunity to call on the Government o ensure that justice is served and that proactive measures be instituted to restore law and order in our nation,” end of quote. The Adventist Church statement says that it is doing its part to call people to repentance and in so doing helping to create a safer environment for our citizens. Yet, the release goes on to say, ongoing murders, some from the very same persons who ought to be protecting us, have instilled fear and chaos in citizens and visitors alike. Says the release, quote: unfortunately, our beautiful jewel is quickly becoming a lawless country where innocent ones pay with their loves at the hands of those who have no regard for their fellowmen,” end of quote. Police reports say that Teddy Murrillo was fatally wounded around one thirty on Saturday morning; but his body laid in a drain a short distance from his home for hours before being discovered. Media reports are that Murrillo was last seen alive around one twenty on Saturday morning as he rode home after socializing with friends at the BTL park.
