NATIONWIDE CLEANUP CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED

A nationwide cleanup campaign has been launched. A committee was put together by campaign sponsors Aldebaran Belize, an environmental group and Love FM to enlist the help of every Mayor in the country to ensure that every municipality is on board with this venture. Committee member Christy Mastry tells us more.

“I think it is really important because it has to do with promoting a sense of civic pride and social responsibility. The idea is that we launched a nationwide campaign in order to get all the municipalities involved all at the same time so that the awareness goes out on a nationwide perspective rather than just weekend individual clean up activities and different initiatives that we do on a smaller scale. It will be ending sometime in September at which we will then award a ten thousand dollar cash prize to the cleanest community.”

Mastry says that they are hoping to instil a sense of civic pride in Belizeans that will extend beyond the competition.

“We did have a first meeting in February with all of the mayors and several of the embassies where all of us got together and there was some discussion even about making it an annual event. Every year there would be an award for the cleanest community because we want the longevity to continue. We do not want the clean up efforts to just stop after the competition but as in speaking with many of the mayors they have many things on their agenda anyways for their individual municipalities. This campaign really just kind of enhances or coulisses all the ideas together.”

Again the grand prize for the campaign is ten thousand dollars.
