A number of Belizean farmers are being trained in the integrated farming system. The project was negotiated between the Governments of Belize and Venezuela. Some funds have been allocated to provide training for Belizean farmers. Dr. Martio Piedra Marin from Earth University in Costa Rica is in country to provide training.

“Essentially the idea is to increase the resiliency of the farms by recycling some of the products that are produced on the farm. For instance, if you have cattle you can use the manure to produce organic fertilizer that can be used for the vegetable crops. If you have pigs on the farm you can use recycled water to clean the pens. The whole idea essentially is to with those two examples to recycle the resources that are on the farm that are being wasted and are not properly used.”
Dr. Marin said following negotiations by Government funds were allocated for the project. The initial phase of the project should last about 18 months. According to Dr. Marin so far the response from the farmers has been very good.
