BDF TO HOLD ANNUAL FAMILY AND SPORTS DAY TOMORROW

August 25, 2006

The Belize Defense force will be having their annual family and sports day tomorrow.  The event will take place at the Marion Jones Sporting complex in Belize City. This morning we spoke with one of the organizers, Major Oscar Mira.

Major Oscar Mira:

“The purpose is to get away from the routine of the BDF, all the hard work that we’ve been doing, try to get as much BDF as possible together along with their families spend some quality time. As you know the BDF is an organization which takes a lot of our time, we don’t have enough time to spend with the family and we have one day where we get as much as possible together with the family so we can spend some quality time and also for the BDF families to get to know each other.”

Mira tells us of the activities planned for the day.

 Major Oscar Mira:

“The day starts off with the full marathon at zero five hundred hours in the morning, have a half marathon at 5:30, a ten kilometer race at 6:00, and a five kilometer race at 6:30. The full marathon race will start at the bridge by Hattieville and it goes along the road to Burrell Boom and down to Marion Jones, the end of Marion Jones that is 26 miles. The half marathon will start at the Burrell Boom junction and that’s 13 miles also ending at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex. All the races will come on the Northern Highway. Events during the day, we have events such as basketball, volleyball and football, and that’s for the BDF. The families will participate in some fun activities in the afternoon, such as lime and spoon for the kids, sack race, three leg races, and other small events for the children.”

Major Oscar Mira of the B-D-F. Mira says the races are open to the public and other organizations have also been invited to take part. People who are interested may register with the B-D-F at Price Barracks or register on line at www–dot–b d f–dot-b z or at the start of the race.
