CONSTRUCTION OF RIO HONDO BRIDGE TO BEGIN IN DECEMBER

The bidding process for the Rio Hondo Bridge will come to an end this month. The Mexican Government committed itself to the construction of the bridge in June of last year on the visit of Mexican President, Vicente Fox. Mexican Ambassador, Arturo Trejo says the funding has been allocated and the construction should begin in December. The bridge and the road access on both sides of the border will be constructed at a cost of ten million U-S dollars. Trejo says this new bridge will help to alleviate traffic congestion on both sides of the border.

“Our Belizeans who cross to Mexico, and Mexicans do it quit often, have simply noticed that the traffic is horrible sometimes especially on weekends so there is a need for a new bridge. And the new bridge will be built around five hundred meters river upwards and even works together with the other bridge. The plans right now foresee that the new bridge will be accessed from Mexico to Belize for heavy vehicles or commercial vehicles. Most access from Belize to Mexico for both commercial and well as private vehicles on the action of the old bridge would be for the access of the private vehicles from Mexico to Belize and for pedestrians.” 

Trejo says that will be important for both and Belize and Mexico.

“This bridge will be simply the most important bi-lateral project for the past 25 years, so the history of the Bi-lateral relations between Belize as an Independent country and Mexico and help in the access infrastructure for both countries in a tremendous way. I think that when the bridge will be finished of course it will be much easier to cross the bridge both for Mexicans and Belizeans. We will have new Customs and Migration facilities if that will accommodate the flow of traffic from Belize to Mexico and from Mexico to Belize.”
