TRIPARTITE DECLARATION AND PLAN OF ACTION DEALING WITH DECENT WORK AGENDA SUBMITTED

November 03, 2006

Caribbean Countries, including Belize, have submitted a Tripartite Declaration and Plan of Action dealing with a Decent Work Agenda in the Caribbean. This declaration was tabled for consideration of the Council for Human and Social Development. National Employment and Enterprise Development Coordinator in the Ministry of Labour, Merilyn Young, explains that the document supports the idea for better wages and working conditions for people at the lower end of the income bracket.

Merilyn Young:

“This declaration is submitted for them to approve it and have them implement it and each country is responsible to do their strategic plan to ensure that this document is realized. And we will also be monitored by our performance by CARICOM and by the ILO and actually I have been cast to work on the National Labour Policy for Belize which this consultation exercise will commence next year. The whole thing is that our people participate in the process too; the Wages Council is doing the consultation right now, writing their concerns, attend the forums because these are things that have to take place in order to make recommendations for the increase in salaries for a better work environment for all our work force.”
