BELIZE CITY MOYOR COMMENTS ON FIRST TEN MONTHS IN OFFICE

January 04, 2007

For Belize City Mayor, Zenaida Moya her first ten months as Mayor and the old capital’s first female mayor went well, despite many adversities. Mayor Moya reflects on the major challenges.

Mayor Zenaida Moya

“We inherited a debt of nine million dollars and we get subventions of only one point five million dollars so it was quite difficult. We have since paid off I believe one point two million dollars so we are slowly trying to deal with the debt and having to fight for resources we believe should be ours. Of course the BTB situation has still not been fully dealt with, in terms of the finances to the council we should be having a meeting next week to deal with that situation. In terms of the sanitation aspect as you may well know that has been an ongoing effort, today a meeting will be held just to finalized the further coordination in terms of the two sanitation companies and the waste disposal company to ensure that there is coordination and we ensure a level of sustainability in the sanitation aspect of the council.”

Mayor Moya also said her Council’s Works Department will soon relocate to mile four on the Western Highway.

Mayor Zenaida Moya

“We are commencing the construction of our new office complex at mile four and a half on the Western Highway. Already works have started and it suppose to be completed with in sixteen weeks so I believe that we have a little less than three months so I am hoping that it will be completed within that time so when that is completed we will be having our works department over there and we will be moving from our Pound Yard compound and we will have the Works Department, the sanitation and the planning section and the vehicle inspection moved over there.”

“What is the arrangement between Mr. Hutchandani and CITCI I understand that he gave fifty thousand dollars to the council to get that work done?”

Mayor Zenaida Moya

“Yes he had put fifty thousand dollars towards that. I must inform though that the council was not going to give up the land just like that. However through legal advice we were informed that he land was sold to Mr. Hutchandani legally and so there was nothing the council could do legally to keep the land. So Mr. Hutchandani has already given twenty five thousand to the council towards the building and a further twenty five thousand dollars will be given upon our vacating the Pound Yard Compound ."

Mayor Moya says her Council carried out many projects in 2006 related to drains and culverts, street repairs, and is planning major projects for 2007.
