ORANGE WALK POLICE BEGIN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME

January 04, 2007

Orange Walk Police have begun an educational program to sensitize the public on issues relating to domestic violence. Officer in Charge of Orange Walk Police, Superintendent Robert Mariano met yesterday with the staff of the Northern Regional hospital. Mariano says he saw fitting to meet with that staff first since the first of the domestic violence related murder victim was an employee of that institution.

Superintendent Robert Mariano

“The program is about reducing the amount of domestic violence in the Orange Walk district. What I was doing yesterday was to join along with the staff of the Northern Regional hospital and we had discussion about domestic violence how to make a report and what to expect after making a report to the police. To my mind the response was positive from the members of the northern regional hospital. There was a lot of questions and suggestions made by them to me and since then we have formed a committee which includes member from the northern regional hospital and the police department. We had police captain Mrs. Antoinette Young Castillo. We have members from the women’s department here in Orange Walk who have joined together and formed a committee between the northern regional hospital and the police department and when I reach to the  other departments and schools we will be forming different committees who will be representing the school and the other departments as well.”

We asked Mariano what the situation is in Orange Walk as it relates to the incidents of domestic violence in that district.

Superintendent Robert Mariano

“Here in Orange Walk I would say I would say that the amount of reports is minimal but I believe that one report is too many and before domestic violence get out of hand in this district we are taking a proactive approach by having these meetings so that it does not get out of hand and for the few reports that we had, to reduce that amount of incidents.”
