January 05, 2007
Plenty Belize is hosting a two day teacher training workshop on organic school gardens. The workshop began today at the U-B Toledo Center. We spoke with Plenty Belize Executive Director, Mark Miller Mark Miller: Plenty Belize Executive Director “Plenty Belize has been working with twenty five schools around the Toledo District helping them as they start up their school garden programme. And so this is a time before teachers go back to school that they can spend some of their time building up their skills really focusing on gardening and farming and look at a couple of the practices that is going to help building the soil, controlling the pests, how to plant and transplant some of those things so that the teachers really have a strong back ground to share with their students. And then Saturday working with the Ministry of Education both here at the district and coming down from QUADS we are going to talk about bringing the gardens into the classroom and how to make the classroom alive using gardens and plants and teach some of these things so that it fits right into what we are learning anyhow as it always has but not always being used that way.” Mark Miller, Executive director of Plenty Belize. Miller says that this year Plenty Belize is grateful for the financial support of PACT. The workshop is opened to all primary school teachers of the Toledo Districts.
