BELIZE CITY COUNCIL AWARDS SCHOLARSHIP TO UB STUDENT

January 08, 2007

A handing over ceremony for the first ever David Pook Scholarship Award took place this afternoon in Belize City. The Belize City Council awarded University student Aaron Humes with a semester scholarship. We spoke with Belize City Councilor Hyacinth Latchman Cuellar.

Hyacinth Latchman Cuellar:Belize City Councilor

“Late last year I brought it up to the council that we should give a scholarship in honour of David Pook’s name, David was murdered last year. The reason why is because David’s dad was an employee of the Belize City Council and we wanted to give back particularly to the family in keeping their son’s name alive. What we did, we came up with a criteria for the scholarship. First the person had to be a University student he or she had to have very good grades so we asked people to send in applications. We got quite a member of applicants who applied for the scholarship. We decided on one Aaron Humes we did do so independently what we did we consulted with the Pook family and they were in total agreement with the person we chose. We chose him one, because of vet good grads h has, he is in financial need of the scholar and his essay that he sent in because that was a major part of how would have gotten the scholarship. His essay was based on, one we need to put back God into our lives and two we need to put family as a priority and he made mention of the values from the old days we need to bring back into our present day so hence the reason Aaron is the recipient of the first ever David Pook scholarship from the Belize City Council."

Hyacinth Latchman Cuellar, Belize City Councilor. Latchman Cuellar says that the scholarship may be renewed at the end of the semester based on Humes’ grades and the availability of funds.
