In its regular meeting yesterday Cabinet considered and approved a proposal that involves the Belize Tourism Board, the Protected Areas Conservation Trust and Fort Street Tourism Village supplementing the Government’s subvention to the Belize City Council. The implementation of the project will see the three organizations jointly contributing what will amount to the equivalent of one U-S dollar head tax to a special Belize City Tourism Development Fund. The fund will be administered by the Ministry of Local Government and disbursed on a monthly basis to the Belize City Council which will be accountable to the Ministry for the use of these funds. This comes into effect February 1.Cabinet says in light of this new arrangement to resolve the issue, the government considers the memorandum of understanding between the Belize City Council and the Belize Tourism Board to be effectively at an end.
