March 07, 2007
The Belize City branch of the Institute for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, IT-VET today inaugurated the first ever Belize Training Bar. Love News spoke with Manager of Belize City IT-VET, Sheldon Samuels. Sheldon Samuels: Manager of Belize City IT-VET “First of all I must say the training bar that we have here today is of a direct partnership of the Belize Tourism Board and IT-VET Belize District. It is our belief that we need to create an opportunity to train our Belizean people on a whole the Belizean community and today’s training bar gives us that opportunity to provider that training. Basically it entails any individual who will want an opportunity or career in bartending an opportunity to receive a short term course in the basics in bartending that will eventually lead to employment.” The Training Bar is donated by the Belize Tourism Board. Handing over of the bar on behalf of the B-T-B was its Director, Tracy Panton. Tracy Panton: Director of B-T-B “Today’s donation I think really came from the students who are studying here from CET, you know it is one thing to give theoretical training and on thing to give practical training that is relevant to our stakeholders. And so the bar is the first of its kind for a Training Institution in Belize that is providing skills training to students and we see that this will give them an opportunity to get on the job experience right here in the classroom.” Director of B-T-B, Tracy Panton. Samuels says that the Training Bar at the IT-VET is just one of the many programs that the Belize Tourism Board assists in facilitating. Sheldon Samuels: Manager of Belize City IT-VET “Indeed we have other types of partnership with B-T-B we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with them late last year to provide training for them. And we will be looking at two major areas like front line level and supervisory level training. At that field we basically train for front line employees and person engaged in inline task. So in terms of line level courses we are looking at courses such as costumer relation, housekeeping, bartending, food and beverage service. In terms of the supervisory level training programs we are looking at Tourism and Hospitality Marketing, Human Resources Management. Managerial Accounting so those are the types of programs we will be offering in conjunction with B-T-B we do the training we facilitate the training and B-T-B will be responsible to certify them.” Manager of IT-VET, Belize City, Sheldon Samuels. According to Samuels, although there are not yet any participants for the training, IT-VET intends to partner with B-T-B in advertising the course.
