BELIZEAN WOMEN TO BE HONORED TONIGHT

Activities in connection with Women’s Week continue. Love News spoke with Director of the Women’s Department Doctor Carol Fonseca.

“Tonight we are going to have a cultural presentation and outstanding award ceremony that is going to be held at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts. We have a reception that starts at 6:30 and then at 7o’clock the actually ceremony will begin. Now this is all in observance of you all know for Women’s Week. What we have done, the Women’s’ Department along with our partner agencies had worked on organizing a program so that we can basically in terms of showing our appreciation to those women throughout our society who have made an instrumental roll in impacting not only the organization who have nominated them and are giving them the award but also the community on a whole. So a total of fourteen women will be given awards tonight and these are women who have been chosen by specific organization such as Youth for the Future, the Police Department and Haven House, WIN -Belize, Y-W-C-A, The National Women’s Commission, the National Committee for Families and Children so a number of different organizations who felt that this really is an opportune time during Women’s week to show how much we appreciate these women, many of them in their own silent way have been doing to not only empower other women but to make significant impact on our community.”

Fonseca shares with us the highlights of the event.

“Tonight is also a celebration of our culture and so we have various performances tonight starting with Miss Leela Vernon who will open up the show and then we also have the Ballet Art School will be doing a performance and we have the Nuevo Palmar Culture Group along with the Belize Poet Society. We have La Runi Hati as well and then we have Tanya Carter performing tonight. We wilt also have presentation made to Miss Y and all of the women who participated in the Miss Y 2006/2007. Miss Shabazz will be doing that presentation and we will also be making presentation to that delegation the women who have traveled from the United States with Miss Shabazz to participate in activities for Women’s Week, so a lot of different activities have been taking place and Miss Shabazz and her delegation have been working very closely with un in all of these activities.”
