March 20, 2007
The Young Men Christian Association is hosting two sports coaches from Nashville Tennessee this week. Love News spoke of the visit with Executive Director at the Y-M-C-A Doctor Clara Cuellar. Doctor Clara Cuellar: Executive Director “They belong to a group call Support Servants. Support Servants is a Christian Organization out of Nashville Tennessee started by a group of young adults who are avid in sports but also avid in the development of young people with Christian Philosophy. And they have been able to recruit other high school coaches and past high school coaches and some collage volunteers with intent to do programmes in Belize. Last year they were here in Corozal and they conducted summer clinics in that session, they are very close to the YMCA in Tennessee and that is how we became connected. So we assist them a little bit with the planning for that programme in Corozal and now we are working together to repeat that programme in Corozal as well as o something in Belize City. And they are here to help us with our training development for our coaches who run our summer programme so that we can improve on our summer programme and possibly extend services we offer those youths all year. So this session we are doing the planning for coaching in basketball, football and volleyball at the same time we also conducted a half day training in athletic injuries, injury prevention and rehabilitation which is why the athletic trainer came at this point.” Cuellar said they hope after this training is completed, trainers will excel in the different sports. Doctor Clara Cuellar: Executive Director “So the YMCA is expanding its programme, we are already known for our excellent swimming programme and we are saying that we can do the same in football, volleyball and basketball in the country. We can develop young people from high school maybe third and fourth forms as well as Junior College who will be competent coaches and youth leaders in the area of basketball, football and volleyball who will then conduct clinics on our behalf to make sure that our youths 12 and below are in positive programmes that develop their sport as well as their overall development as young people. And this is what this is about we are expanding what we offer to the Belizean public and what we are known to be offering over the past several years.” Doctor Clara Cuellar, Executive Director at the Y-M-C-A.
