NATIONAL MATH OLYMPIAD FINALS TO BE HELD TOMORROW

March 22, 2007

Six high schools will be vying for the title of the 2007 Belize Math Olympiad National Champions tomorrow in Belmopan. The regional finals sponsored by the Social Security Board – Belize were completed earlier this month. Love News spoke with Public Relations Manager at the Belize Social Security Board Rohjani Toombs.

Rohjani Toombs: Public Relations Manager

“From February 20 to March 9 we had regional competitions where we saw over forty schools competing of those competitions six schools were successful namely Julian Cho Technical High from P.G, Orange Walk Technical High, Bishop Martin High School both from Orange Walk Town, Belize Christian Academy from Cayo, Pallotti High Scholl and St. John College both from Belize City. So both schools will be competing with each other in the final that is going to be held tomorrow. The format will remain absolutely the same, the final is just going to be exciting because it’s the best of the best competing but it is exactly the same Jeopardy type of game that they will be playing so it is something that the students are now use to or have had experience dealing with.”

The six regional winners that will compete in the National Championship are Coral and Catarino Pop of Julian Cho Technical High School, Roberto Gongora and Dorita Sanchez of Orange Walk Technical High, Miriam Paiz and Lingpo Huang of Bishop Martin High School, Namrita Balani and Ronald James Rempel of Belizean Christian Academy, Juliet McNab and Shanique Roca of Pallotti High School and Eric Alamina and Christopher Waight of Saint John’s College. Toombs also explained the objective of the competition.

Rohjani Toombs: Public Relations Manager

“To foster the love of Math and to take away the stigma or the fear of the subject a lot of time you hear people saying that they don’t like Math or they cant do Math. And we have heard from several Math Teachers during this consultation process it’s not that they can’t do it, it’s just that Math takes a little more practice than other subjects. So what we hope is to foster the love of Math and to really promote a competitive clean working environment for students. The questions that are in the Math Olympiad come from the CSEC/CXC Syllabus and that’s something that they are thought throughout their years at high school, so it is not a different question it’s not something that we are pulling out of the air it’s something that they are already been thought.”

The Belize Math National Championship will be held tomorrow in the U-B Gymnasium in Belmopan beginning at 10 o’clock in the morning. Each first place team member will receive a fully loaded computer, one thousand dollars educational grant, a plaque, a certificate of participation and a medal. The first place school will receive a L-C-D projector and a first place trophy. The members of the second place team will each receive a plaque, a certificate of participation, a medal and one thousand dollars educational grant while their school receives a second place trophy and 500 dollars. The members of the third place team will receive a plaque, a certificate of participation, a medal and 750 dollars educational grant while their school received a third place trophy and 400 dollars.
