MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND HAND IN HAND MINISTRIES TO PROVIDE TERTIARY LEVEL SCHOLARSHIPS

Ministry of Education and the Hand in Hand Ministries collaborate to provide tertiary level scholarships. Recently, Minister of Education, Francis Fonseca, visited the Hand in Hand Outreach Center where he pledged his ministry’s support and commitment to the organization. Love News spoke with the Director of International Programming for Hand in Hand Ministries Outreach Program, Mark Phesing.

“On his visit he was impressed with the works the Hand in Hand Ministries is doing throughout the country of Belize and his commitment as well as Hand in Hand commitment is for higher education. We started a University of Belize Scholarship in Belize City to provide a Tertiary Scholarship for ten University of Belize students. And so Minister Fonseca promised five full University of Belize scholarships for students who are interested.” 

Phesing said that their organization is looking for deserving students who desire working in the fields of nursing or social work.He outlines the requirements for application.

“The Social Service Agency and so one of the things we are trying to develop more of is social work and also nursing skills we are applying top those two different departments. So it’s just not any student from the University of Belize but more students who are interested in pursuing their nursing as well as their social work profession, so we are asking for those types of students to come forth. And the scholarship is simply proof that they finished their high school and they must have a accumulative GPA of 2.5 and above and also prove that that demonstrated leadership qualities while they have been in high school and if they can write a letter to Hand in Hand Ministry stating what they are actually planning to do.”

Provisions were also made by Minister Fonseca to ensure that the Outreach Center was complete with a Pre-school teacher and an assistant.

“The Outreach Center is a treatment center for children who are affected or infected with HIV and AIDS and one of the things we have at the center is a full fledge day care programme as well as an Outreach Center and we are  just now set up as a Pre-school where both of our teachers are now hired and the Pre-school has been up and running for the last month. And so we are really excited about this initiative that the Ministry of Education has provided for us.”

For the past four years, the Hand in Hand Ministries has been operating a High School Scholarship Program. In addition, they work closely with the University of Belize to engage tertiary level students in services to the community. The scholarships are for this coming school year, in August.
