EUROPEAN ARTIST RECORDS WITH LOCAL ARTISTS

International European music superstar, Fat Boy Slim, features Belizean musicians on his latest recordings.The Euro-dance musician was in the country last week, where he combined his Euro-dance style with Belizean Garifuna rhythms, along with lyrics from local poet, the Grand Master. Love News spoke with Director and Music Producer of Stone Tree Records, Ivan Duran.

“He conducted a series of recordings at a studio in San Pedro, Mata Grande Studios. He played with members of the Garifuna Collectives and Andy Palacio. Basically the idea was to experiment with his beats, more precisely dance beats. Fat Boy Slim is a famous dance beat producer and artist. For the first time he blended those European dance beats with Garifuna drums and vocals. Andy Palacio wrote a song with Him and also the Grandmaster was there delivering some lyrics as well.”

“How many Belizeans were featured and who are they?”

“They were about eight I think, three percussionist, Giovanni Chee, Lugua Centino, Joshua Arana also singers Desiree Arana and Marcelo Torres also engineer Al Obando was there as well and Andy Palacio and the Grand Master. It was a very good experience. I think this is the very first time this experiment has been done. A total of three tracks were done.” 

In the next few months, Fat Boy Slim will be working on the recordings at his studio in London. Duran says that this was an experiment combination and what happens next, will be determined after the final songs have been completed. He adds that this is an excellent opportunity for Belizean musicians as it sensitizes other cultures on Belizean music.

“I think it is a great opportunity for our musicians to be collaborating with well known international artist and in this case Fat Boy Slim perhaps is the most famous name in dance music in Europe and the idea is for us to take our music to a totally different audience, and it will be very difficult for them to be expose to anything of what we are doing. So having a big name like Fat Boy Slim supporting this could make a big difference and hopefully will get more people interested in the music of Belize.”
