The Statistical Institute of Belize is conducting a Labour Force Survey. The S-I-B, formerly the Central Statistical Office is conducting two phases of the survey this year. Phase one is already underway and will run until the twenty-seventh of this month. Glenn Avilez the Director General of the Statistical Institute of Belize explains how the survey is conducted. Glenn Avilez: Director General “It is conducted by trained interviewers visiting houses across the country both rural and urban areas interviewing selected households. To gather information on the labour force of the country particularly in regards to the unemployment rate and the us eto inform policy decision on unemployment.” Avilez says that a similar survey conducted last year, shows that Belize has a current unemployment rate of nine point four percent. Meanwhile for residents who may be hesitant about disclosing information to interviewers, Avilez says that the S-I-B has a strategy in place. Glenn Avilez: Director General “We trained our interviewers to use as best as they can persuasion and we explained to them the purpose of the survey and also tell them that the information that they provide confidential and it is protected by law. We hope that with words like that, that they will be willing to respond to the survey.” Director General of the Statistical Institute of Belize, Glenn Avilez. For more information on the S-I-B’s current survey or any other survey previously conducted, you can visit their headquarters on Constitution Drive in Belmopan City, during normal working hours. Later this month, there will be the launch of the S-I-B. At that launch information on the Institute and its functions will be made public.
