B-N-T-U HOLDS ANNUAL NATIONAL CONVENTION

The Belize National Teachers Union’s Annual National Convention is underway at the Novelo’s Convention Center in Santa Elena. The convention is being held with the theme “B-N-T-U Advocating and Promoting Life Long Learning”. Love News spoke with George Frazer of the B-N-T-U who told us about the two day event.

“The key note speaker for this years convention will be Dr. Petters well known highly acclaim Belizean, Educator, Scientist and Professor in Math and Science at Duke University one of the leading University in the United States. Then we have other activities which include the keynote presentation by Senator Godwin Hulse, he will be speaking on Socio Economic issues presently facing Belize and Belizeans. The second day is when we are going to have the big elections. The nominations will be placed on record on the first day so that people could know who the candidates are. They could do there campaigning and everything. The main purpose of our convention is to deal with the business of the Union, hear the annual reports both of national and branch level. You know the BNTU is presently comprised of ten branches; each branch has its on executive. So we are having reports, these have already  been endorse by membership of each branch but to formalize it and to ratify it by the convention, these will just be presented and usually we have a convention journal or booklet of which each member is given a copy.” 

Tomorrow will be the election of officers. Frazer tells us of the two slates that will be contesting.

“The convention itself, every year we elect three officers, The National President, The National Secretary and the National Treasure on the second day of the convention. These people are eligible for re-election. This year Mr. Fuentes will not seeking re-election. They are three persons each from two slates for national president we have Mrs. Elena Smith the current President of the Belize Branch and then we have Mr. Jaime Panty he is the current President of the San Ignacio Branch. We have other people contesting for national secretary. The incumbent Mrs. Endivora Jorgenson from Corozal, Principal of Corozal Community College she will seek re-election as National Secretary. From the Belize Branch from their slate they have Mrs. Adelida Guerra teacher at St. Joseph Primary. For National Treasurer the Belize Branch is also putting up a candidate who is Ms Kathleen Flowers a teacher from Gwen Lizarraga High School. For the other slate Mr. Victor Williams a teacher at Stann Creek Ecumenical High.”
