The National Emergency Management Organization has received a new warehouse from which it will distribute emergency supplies in times of disaster. The five thousand square-foot warehouse at Independence Village,Stann Creek was constructed under the agreement for economic and technical cooperation between the U-S and Belize. The U-S provided funding through its Southern Command Humanitarian Assistance Programme. They also provided technical assistance through their Construction Agency. The Government and NEMO provided access to the location, title to the land, electricity and water supply, and full duty and tax exemptions for the items used in the construction of the building, which cost 400 thousand U-S dollars. The completion of the southern regional warehouse brings to an end the second phase of NEMO’s goal to provide warehouses in strategic areas of the country for disasters. The new warehouse is on a five-acre parcel of land and the facility will provide support to Stann Creek and Toledo Districts in times of need. Through the U-S Southern Command Humanitarian Assistance Programme Belize has benefited from the retrofitting of its Ladyville Warehouse and the construction of the Central Regional Warehouse in Belmopan. At the opening of the new warehouse U-S Ambassador Robert Dieter announced that funding for the Northern Regional Warehouse should be available in 2008.
