POLICE STORIES

August 06, 2007

Police are investigating the shooting death of 17-year-old Marvin Chavaria which occurred on Saturday night. Police are additionally investigating a stabbing incident that occurred at the same time of the shooting. Police say Chavaria was a part of a group of men who had visited a residence on Perez Street in Santa Elena Town to confront two brothers. The group reportedly met up with 18-year-old Justin Gordon as they were leaving the residence on Perez Street and identified him as an associate of the two brothers who they had gone to the residence to confront.  One of the youth in the group is said to have produced a knife and inflicted four stab wounds to Gordon's back before fleeing the area.  Gordon was rushed to the San Ignacio Hospital and later transferred to the Western Regional where he remains in a serious but stable condition.  Police have since detained a number of suspects and are continuing their investigations into the matter.  Police are examining reports and the possibility that Marvin Chavaria might have actually been shot by a member of his own group shortly after confronting 22-year-old David Galindo and 20-year-old George Galindo.  Another member of the group, Rueben Chavaria who is the brother of Marvin Chavaria received a gunshot wound to the right foot.  Police are also examining the possibility that the wound was self inflicted.

Belize City Police have detained a 44-year-old female who is alleged to have inflicted a single stab wound to 56-year-old Leo Jones which sent him to the Karl Heusner memorial Hospital with stab wound to the right abdomen.  Initial investigations reveal that both persons are residents of the Department of Human Services Homeless Shelter on Church Street in Belize City.  Police are investigating and have not yet ascertained what led to the stabbing incident.  Jones is hospitalized in a stable condition and the suspect is detained pending further investigations.
