CONSTRUCTION OF NEW MARKET IN SAN IGNACIO BEGIN NEXT WEEK

August 08, 2007

The San Ignacio Santa Elena Town Council is granting 25 percent discount on property tax to all residents of the twin towns. Roque Mai has the details of this and other news from San Ignacio.

“According to the Town Council, the offer will end on August 31, 2007.Therefore the council encourages all property and owners who are indebted with the council from 2003-2006,to take advantage of this offer, for they will be forced to take measures necessary to collect all outstanding taxes owed to the council. The council requests this action, however with the lack of support from Central government, the council will need to ensure that all taxes are collected in order to carry out all the responsibilities at this point including retail of streets as well, the upgrade and maintenance of parks and general cleaning of municipalities. In other related news, the market vendor for this week was relocated for a temporary time for the construction of a new market.”

Mayor August of San Ignacio

“The construction of the new Farmer’s market will be shortly underway. As the mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena I’d like to thank the Belize Rural Development Program for the funding of this project. It’s been many years since the people of San Ignacio and Santa Elena and especially the farmers that have come from the rural areas have been asking for this new market and we have finally been able to allocate the funds. It has taken us one year. The San Ignacio,Santa Elena is working along with the BRD program to procure the funds but we have been successful. The market is finally underway. The BRD will be funding approximately $500,000 towards the market program and the San Ignacio,Santa Elena will be putting another $43,000 BZ apart from almost $20,000 that we have invested in the architectural design of the consultation with the rural farmers that come here on the weekdays especially. We’re hoping that we can start the reconstruction of August 13 with the contractor. The winning tender was modern company limited for the building of the new San Ignacio Santa Elena market.I would just like to express my sincere gratitude to the Belize Rural Development Program for making this project a reality.Well we initially started the design of the market project. We consulted with the farmers and the people that come out on the weekends. The initial project called for 24 permanent stalls but presently we’ll be constructing 15 due to us not having the necessary finance to cover the 24.And most of the area will cover the streets and pavement so when it rains it won’t be as muddy as before, the design of the building, the permanent stalls would probably have a roofing over them and we’d have a new facility bathroom that would be built and a proper garbage disposal for the market. We thought that that was very essential to our proper garbage disposal and so all of that is budgeted in the program. The project should take anywhere between four to six months. We started in August so we should probably be finished in February. As the mayor of San Ignacio,Mr.August.”

“This Sunday market day will be as normal but only to know that price of vegetable and fruits are rising rapidly. If you ask the vendors they will say that the farmers are selling their products expensive and if you ask the farmer,he will say because of pesticides it is very expensive. Therefore, who to blame.Reporting for Love FM News,I am Roque Mai from San Ignacio.”
