August 08, 2007
The National Committee for Families and Children is looking for children to be part of their radio and television shows. Stephanie Daniels is program coordinator for advocacy and public education at N-C-F-C and says the purpose of the shows is to educate other children on the rights of children. Stephanie Daniels:Coordinator for Advocacy and Public Education at N-C-F-C “The radio program that our children develop and it’s basically to teach other children about the human rights mainly through the CRC on the Convention and Rights of the Child. What we’re doing is we’re recruiting for our media training because an important aspect of this program is the capacity building. So every year in August we have a media training that equip the children with the skills that they need.So we’re recruiting for both Kid’O Rama, which is one program and we also have another program that we call the Informed Teen Reporters and that’s a little bit older, ages 14-17.What they’re doing is they’re putting their perspective on a lot of the social issues that affect children.” Daniels says the appropriate children for the shows are children who don’t have a problem voicing their opinion on issues regarding children and also who are not shy. Stephanie Daniels:Coordinator for Advocacy and Public Education at N-C-F-C “Well we’re looking for, first and foremost children who are not shy.Because a lot of it is you know, one is for radio and one is for television and so we try to look for the little personalities who won’t be afraid and ashamed to step up and say this is my opinion and this is what I think. We’re also looking for critical thinkers because these programs are run by the children, meaning that they do their research, they come up with their ideas, they write their scripts and they deliver their scripts.” Parents of interested children and teens should contact the N-C-F-C at phone number 223-00-59 or 223-11-80 or at number sixty two Cleghorn Street in Belize City. Daniels says it is very important for Belizeans to know that children have opinions on all issues affecting them. Stephanie Daniels:Coordinator for Advocacy and Public Education at N-C-F-C “When our Belizean people, when we talk about these things,we tend to forget that children are involved and they might have opinions. Also to promote our mandate which is children’s participation. We have decided to engage with Channel 5 to do some media features. They gave the teens an opportunity to express their opinions and so far they have done two features. One of them is on commercial sexual exploitation and the other is on the dangers of the internet.” Stephanie Daniels, coordinator for advocacy and public education at N-C-F-C.
