BELIZE ROTARY CLUB PRESENTS 'BREADFRUIT KINGDOM' PREMIERE SHOW

August 09, 2007

Tonight is the premier show of Breadfruit Kingdom, a play performed by members of the Belize City Rotary Club and friends of the Club. Public Relations Chairperson of Belize City Rotary Club, Sandra McKay spoke with Love News about tonight’s premier performance.

Sandra McKay:Public Relations Chairperson of Belize City Rotary Club

“Tonight the premiere of Breadfruit Kingdom will be at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts at 8pm sharp and remember the main reason we are encouraging the public to come out and support,is because the purpose for which we’re having his fundraiser is to help children with heart disease in Belize,to be able to access the necessary  surgery to correct those situations for our Gift of Life Program and we’re fundraising for that purpose primarily. We are also going to be using some of the proceeds for our literacy project on the south side of Belize City. Now,whilst your supporting a worthy cause, you will really be getting your money’s worth because the show that we have prepared for the Belizean public is second to none. Our Director Jamie Thompson ensures that he will deliver a first class production. It’s going to be comedy, dancing, singing,a lot of laughter, pure family fun,and we really want to make sure that we get full support from the Belizean public.Tonight’s show is almost sold out so people need to get their tickets right now.If you did not get to come tonight then you can try for Saturday or Sunday night.Tickets are $50,$30 and $15 for premium, reserve and general admission.”

McKay takes us a little deeper into what the play is about and what the audience should look forward to.

Sandra McKay:Public Relations Chairperson of Belize City Rotary Club

“The play itself is written by Patrick Brown. He’s a playwright from Jamaica.Patrick has been donating his script to the Rotary Club of Belize free of cost to enable us to fundraise for the Gift of Life Program and this one is a fairytale. It is about this royal family,King Street played by Carlo Mason,Queen Street played by myself and Princess Street played by my daughter Kalifah McKay and a host of other cast members. The storyline is that this king that is really kind of oppresses the peasants of Breadfruit Kingdom and so you know that they will be staging peaceful demonstrations and as well they’ll be some rioting but that’s apart of the fun.Patrick has a way of taking serious social issues and just finding the humorous side to these things. So you know you can really come and let down your hair and have a lot of fun.The play also entails some flatulent jokes that I’m sure the public will be sitting their sides with laughter over those and as well you see where there’s a tendency to not want to be shackled by the law as the king says. For all of that it’s really in good humor and the public can really come out and expect more that their money’s worth.”

We also spoke with nineteen year old director, Jamie Thompson.

Jamie Thompson:Play director

“Breadfruit Kingdom is about the king oppressing his people and what really the people have to do to get the king overthrown. At the same time, the king is trying to marry off his daughter.Basically it’s a lot of fun, music, comedy and drama. So it’s a family show that everybody will enjoy.Another thing in the show is that the messages that the place is sending must always have a lot of determination and perseverance.”

When we asked Thompson about costumes and props, this is what he had to say.

Jamie Thompson:Play director

“Basically we have to work with what we have. You know the script is written in a certain time period and the fashion theme has to reflect that. You have to use everything that will accentuate the message in the script.”

Play director, Jamie Thompson. McKay says the play will soon be traveling outside of Belize City.

Sandra McKay:Public Relations Chairperson of Belize City Rotary Club

“We will be traveling to San Ignacio on August 25th, that’s a Saturday. And then we go to Belmopan on August 26th.Tickets are available from Rotarians in those areas for the districts show.We know that the Rotary Club of Belize has really become known for producing these kinds of light contents in their plays and we believe this is the fourth year that we’re doing this so we’re hoping on our Rotary Theatre Company to deliver this kind of production and entertainment to the Belizean public once per year at least. That is what we see in the future.”
