POLICE STORIES

September 11, 2007

27-year-old Gregory Martinez who was charged with the murder of Police Corporal Benedicto Coy was acquitted today. The jury deliberated for about three hours before it arrived at its verdict. Corporal Coy was fatally stabbed in his chest around six-30 on Christmas Eve 2005 in front of Lion King Club on King Street. The two eyewitnesses Police Constable Anibal Castellanos and the deceased son Wallace Coy testified that they saw Martinez stab the deceased. Martinez took the witness stand and gave an alibi testimony. He said that at the time of the incident he was at his mother-in-law’s house with his girlfriend. The two corroborated Martinez’ testimony. Martinez was represented by attorney Michael Peyrifitte. Senior Crown Counsel Merlene Moody represented the prosecution. The trial judge was Justice John Gonzalez.

Belize City Police have detained a man pending charges after he allegedly stole a chain and two medals from a woman. Margaret Ogaldez of a Wilson Street address told Police she was standing in front of her home around twelve thirty yesterday afternoon. Ogaldez said she saw two dark complexioned men riding separate bicycles coming toward her. One of the men grabbed Ogaldez’ gold chain and two gold medals valued at six hundred and seventy five dollars and tried to escape. Two off duty Police Officers and a civilian who were in the area assisted in the capture and detention of the suspect who was still in possession of the stolen property. He is presently detained pending charges.
