September 12, 2007
Organizers and delegates of the Miss Belize Pageant gathered at the Princess Hotel and Casino this morning to meet with the press. National Director of Pageants Belize, Margaret Johnson spoke with us about today’s event. Margaret Johnson,National Director of Pageants Belize: “We figured that the more you can put our girls in front of the press, the better it is for them to be able to address in the finals with the judges and even to help them to get ready to represent our country. If they don’t will, still it helps them to prepare for interviews like job interviews.Everything we do here prepares them for more than just a pageant. So I’m very pleased that they were able to come out and be able to share something about themselves even if it’s just one statement.” Johnson explains what to look forward to come pageant night, Saturday, September 15th at the Belize City Centre. She also says that tickets are available at very attractive rates. Margaret Johnson,National Director of Pageants Belize: “I’m not one for traditional stuff.I try to keep certain things like yes there’s a swimsuit but what kind of swimsuit, what will be done to that swimsuit. And we’re not talking about showing off skin.We believe that you can have sensuality of a woman and still have their clothes on.So we have changed something really drastic this year and all the delegates loved it and everybody was like WOW.It’s never been tried before not even internationally,Miss Universe,Miss World, never. We also changed the format for the evening gown completely. What people are expecting for the evening gown is not what they’re going to get. It’s nothing bored. We’ve already stepped up everything. We remember people going to the fashion show last year and they said ‘Wow that was hot!’.So we took some of the fashion show elements and we dropped in right into the pageant this year. There shouldn’t be a moment of boredom, not even for entertainment.Entertainment is going to be continuously flowing and for less.People can actually get in to the finals for Miss Belize are $10.That is unheard of.I mean you gotta come and see it.I’m excited about it.I’m really, really excited about it.” Johnson told us that the opening number will be a bang and long enough for everyone to enjoy. She says that she is grateful that the candidates are working very hard to make the pageant a success. In terms of what these ladies are competing for, Johnson says, a full scholarship for higher education along with other prizes are in store. Margaret Johnson,National Director of Pageants Belize: “Miss Belize we believe in education. We believe that at the end of the event Miss Belize should have a scholarship, whether we give it to her or we get someone to give it to her.If we do not get a company to give it to her then Pageants Belize pick up that slot.In the case of Miss Belize Universe, she will be going back to school in January and she has an option of going to school here in Belize or in the United States.Miss Belize World, once she’s finished too,she has a scholarship. So Miss Belize this year,at the end of her reign she goes back to school. If she doesn’t want to go back to traditional school then some kind of education in something but you must go back to school in whatever it is.We have a lot of prizes from resorts. We have gift packages and cosmetics from Avon,we also have a lot of jewelry,a lot of clothes. We have a company out in New York that has given the winner quite a number of items and she gets to just sit down and choose whatever she wants and that’s something that I think is kinda cool and it’s interesting that they would offer us that. The get several international subscription magazines for the year - mostly in style so that they can keep up with it.Of course they get trips to wherever the airlines fly.All the airlines,at some point come in and assist us.Sometimes it’s before and sometimes at the end that they come and assit us so with everything Miss Belize World and Miss Belize Universe, any one of the titles.” Love F-M is sponsoring a delegate. She is Keisha Daniels representing Stann Creek. We spoke with Keisha to find out more about who is and why she is competing. Keisha Daniels, delegate representing Stann Creek: “We haven’t had delegates from the Stann Creek district and I took the opportunity to come out and represent by district.I believe I have what it takes to take back to crown.Saturday night we have our dance, the evening wear as well as dances. It has been great. Our trainer has trained us very well.I try my best to do the best that I can and to be the best that I can.I try to walk at night,I prepare myself by walking in the hallways, looking in the mirror, looking at myself, watching my face and I want to encourage all Belizeans, especially people from the Stann Creek district to come and support me.” Another delegate, Miss Belize Rural, Jenine Thompson says the pageant has gone beyond solely physical beauty. Jenine Thompson,Miss Belize Rural: “I think the pageant has evolved. It’s not only based on beauty,it’s more about intelligence and I think that’s why this year we have about three teachers including myself participating. It’s hard but I think it’s worth it honestly. Please come out and support. You won’t regret it.It’s only $10.Eight beautiful ladies strutting their stuff in evening gown,it’s worth it.A very prestigious pageant so come out and support.” Miss Belize Rural, Jenine Thompson.
