September 13, 2007
Callers to Love FM’s morning show have brought up concerns of the shortness of traffic wardens in schools zones. Presently, only the bigger schools enjoy this facility while others schools face the problem of motorists not adhering to traffic regulations near schools.Love News contacted the Belize City Council concerning this issue and according to Mayor Zenaida Moya it’s an issue they have been trying to address. Zenaida Moya,Belize City Mayor: “I must say that again,it is something that we as a City Council would wish we could provide wardens for each school. It is a cost to the council and that would mean,we would have to bring on additional persons to take on those extra positions for those additional schools. We are hoping that we will be able to provide traffic crossing warden to each school. We just have to ensure that we start receiving the necessary funds and funds that should be coming into the council and that means funds coming from Central Government,as well as funds coming from residents as it pertains to paying of property taxes and businesses as it pertains to trade licenses.” Moya said that there may be solutions to this problem; one of them is that volunteers from P-T-As can assist. Zenaida Moya,Belize City Mayor: “I believe that would be of great help to the council,to the schools,to the students. And any parent that feels like they would like to be a volunteer traffic warden, they can feel free to come in and let us discuss that. But definitely,it is something that we would like addressed.” Belize City Mayor, Zenaida Moya.
