September 13, 2007
Eight Belizean students have received Bachelors level scholarships from the Government of Cuba. Roel Moralez will pursue a degree in Physics, Melida Zabaneh in Economics, Deon Kelly and Deshawn Garbutt in Electrical Engineering, Desiree Armstrong in Special Education, Kelvin Yacab in Natural Sciences, Jamie Hibberd in Civil Engineering and Indira Williams in Agronomy. The scholarship will cover tuition, fees, room, board and books. The Government of Belize will provide the students with a monthly stipend. During this year Cuba granted 30 scholarships to Belize to study in Cuba, 20 of them for the Latin American School of Medicine of Havana. The Cuban Embassy says currently there are 60 thousand foreign young people from 120 countries studying free of charge in Cuba’s universities and colleges or under direct tutorship of Cuban professors in other countries. More than 150 of that number are from Belize. Since 1961 the Cuban Government has been granting scholarships to train professionals and technicians.
