September 17, 2007
The Belize Mayors Association says it has decided to financially assist municipalities that are in need of some assistance. Since last week we have been reporting that the Mayors Association had expressed concern with the amount of money allotted by Government for the celebrations. The Association met last Friday to discuss the situation. In its release the Association says it is appealing to all Belizeans to condemn the Government. Last week we spoke with a government spokesperson who told us they had made financial contributions to the towns councils and city councils for September Celebrations activities. He said each town council including the Belmopan City council received five thousand dollars while the Belize City council received ten thousand dollars. The spokesman said government could not meet the 2006 donations level this year as it had other commitments and priorities which includes hurricane relief efforts.
