CUBOLA PRODUCTIONS INTRODUCES NEW BOOK

September 18, 2007

On the twenty sixth anniversary of Belize’s Independence, Cubola Productions has taken the initiative in publishing and releasing its most recent book.  Taking Stock: Belize at 25 years of Independence is a collection of essays written by both Belizean and foreign authors.  On hand for the release of the book this morning was Otto Pook from Cubola Productions.

Otto Pook from Cubola Productions:

“This book presents issues from Caribbean wide interest, from a Belizean perspective. It consists of several essays written by experts in the field of economy, environment, society and culture. What it does like the title of the books says,it takes stock. They look at what where Belize was twenty-five years ago and where it is now.And look at it added from a very academic perspective and presented in a very unbiased way or non-political.”

According to the publisher the book reflects on what brought Belize to this point after twenty five years.  This is highlighted in the areas of economy, environment, society, and culture.  Pook says the book is written for all to understand.

Otto Pook from Cubola Productions:

“It is for both.I mean everybody needs to know about the economy of Belize or what’s our status when it comes to the environment, like what about our society, how these people view our society. There are many things that you’re very familiar with like we as a people in Belize, where were we twenty-five years ago and where we are now.So it’s for everybody.”

As in everything Belizean you can never get all in a book of three hundred pages, that is why the publishing house has planned to release the second volume of this edition.  Minerva Aponte Jolly is member of Cubola Production and told us about the plan.

Minerva Aponte Jolly, member of Cubola Production:

“This one is the first volume. There’s going to be a second volume, and it’s going to account for topics that are not included on this.We cannot include every topic but for instance,a lot has happened in education, from the time of independence to now.A lot has happened in medicine. Some things are good and some things are not good. And in these essays, those are covered. For instance, this one has an essay on the reef and it discusses just where the reef was at physically and also, not just the health of the reef but the use that the reef was given twenty-five years ago,and how that has changed. What has happened, why, how it impacts the Belizean economy, and those are all covered. Those subjects in the second volume,we hope to cover some projects that we think are important.Part of Cubola’s mission is to publish Belizean history,Belizean accounts and to help Belizean writers be heard.”

This book forms part of Cubola’s Belize collection series.  The book sells for thirty five dollars at the Book Center and the Angelus Press.
