October 29, 2007
A new area in the Belize District was given National Park Status today. Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Florencio Marin, today signed a statutory instrument declaring Peccary Hills a National Park. A release from the Government press office says that the 10 thousand 744 acres reserve is of high economic value as a visitor destination. The area is pristine and has a wide biodiversity of flora and fauna, riddled with caves and many natural arches and an important watershed for the Sibun River valley. This new National Park is located south of the Sibun River and west of the Northern Lagoon or twenty miles from Belize City. The release says that this Reservation Order is part of the Ministry’s plan for the continued maintenance of our protected areas system and the environment to play a part of the economic well being of the country.
