MINISTER OF HEALTH,JOSE COYE SPEAKS ON A NUMBER OF HEALTH ISSUES IN BELIZE

October 31, 2007

Minister of Health, Jose Coye was a guest on Love F-M’s morning Show.  Coye spoke on a number of health issues in Belize. One of the topics of discussion was the proposed sale of the Universal Health Services.Coye updated us on the issue saying that the matter continues to be handled by the Ministry of Finance.

Hon. Jose Coye,Minister of Health:

“That is a process that is taking place now in the Ministry of Finance where the government will make it a commitment to use its best efforts to try to get the private sector to take over the Universal Health Services debt and to buy out the institution and that process is now taking place. Well I can’t say exactly when it will be. I did make a statement earlier that I had expected that it was something imminent but sometimes these negotiations can just go on. I’m hoping that in the end, indeed, it will be a positive conclusion where the private sector can keep the doors of that institution open and I think it’s needed for the country.”

Arturo Cantun,Love FM:

“Do you have any idea who all are the persons or the investors interested in it?”

Hon. Jose Coye,Minister of Health:

“I cannot call the name of the group. I think it’s about three groups put together and they’re mostly from outside the country, as I understand, but I don’t have all the details of the process with the Ministry of Finance.”

In August Minister Coye had said that one of the groups interested in purchasing the institution was said to be a non-profit organization based in France.
