December 21, 2007
Director of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Dr. Ramon Figueroa has resigned from the Belize Social Security Board. Since its inception in 1999 Figueroa has been working with the program. He was also the Director of the Employment Injury Division of the Belize Social Security Board. His resignation comes at a time when the N-H-I is scheduled to roll out across the country. Officials have said that the N-H-I project will cost approximately 40 million dollars per year for primary health care services. The United Democratic Party in a release issued today says that the government is playing politics with the program and that the attempts to fast track the country wide rollout is contrary to all technical and professional advice. The release says that although the government is signing contracts for the delivery of services countrywide by both public and private providers for two years, only five million dollars in funding have been secured for the project by the Social Security Board.
