FOUR ORGANIZATIONS RECEIVE GRANT FROM IRISH AID CIVIL SOCIETY FUND

December 21, 2007

Four Belizean non-governmental organizations have been granted a total of six hundred thousand Euros to run for the next three years.  The grant came from the Irish Aid Civil Society Fund and the organizations to benefit are the Belize Council for the Visually Impaired, B-C-V-I; the Society for the Promotion of Education and Research, SPEAR; Help for Progress, and Tumul’Kin Center of Learning.  The group will be getting two hundred thousand Euros every year or fifty thousand Euros per organization per year.  The funds will be utilized for the next three years on individual projects by the respective organizations.  These projects will be implemented in the Toledo District addressing issues of poverty reduction such as strengthening of the voice of civil organizations in order to influence policy making at the local and national level.  These policies should be for the promotion of sustainable development and the improvement of livelihood security.  Secondly, it will support local communities to participate in the development at the local and national level and to gain access to resources for the local development and the improvement of essential services.  The programs will also assist communities and organizations to respond effectively to the H-I-V pandemic through programs of prevention, care and support.  Programs will seek to address the education of human rights especially women and children.  Lead agency for the consortium is Help for Progress.  Projects are expected to be implemented in January 2008.
