April 03, 2008
An early morning fire in San Pedro town partially destroyed the San Pedro Lion’s Den. Though the fire was quickly brought under control, fire official in charge of the San Pedro Fire Department, Jerome Garcia, says he thinks the fire was as a result of neglect. Jerome Garcia, San Pedro Fire Service “Yes when we got there we saw smoke and fire coming out of the most northern part of the building. The building is made out of wood with plywood in the upper floor and since the fire was from there we had to make a force entry through the rear door and there we saw the fire. We then attacked the fire and brought it under control in some ten minutes or so. The damage to the building is in the interior and caused by both fire and water. In my opinion the estimated damage to the building is about 30% and the cause of the fire may be caused by an electric fan; a fan that was left plugged in and over heated and started the fire” Garcia said that the fire department is trying to locate the individuals responsible for the building to determine if the building was insured. For the past month a total of three fires have been reported in that municipality. Garcia asks residents to be very responsible. Jerome Garcia, San Pedro Fire Service “Well most of the fires is because of negligence because of a fire left on or fuel supply line that goes from the tank to the stove is made out of plastic. These are the calls most people are calling in with so people need to be careful. Also we have noticed some electrical problems since some houses have hanging wires that needs to be upgraded.” The building is located on Barrier Reef Drive. The building is being used as a multi purpose facility. Another fire this time in Georgeville has destroyed a two-storey wooden house. Susan Wright occupied the home with her uncle. Reports are no other structures were affected by the fire. Police investigations shows that it is believed that both individuals who lived at the house are mentally challenged. Police say that Wright told them that she was trying to burn some old clothes in side the house when the house caught fire. The house was completely destroyed. The fire reportedly started around eleven this morning.
