2008 P.S.E. RESULTS SHOW IMPROVEMENT

The Ministry of Education has released the statistics for this year’s Primary School Examination results.  Out of a total of six thousand five hundred and seventy one students that registered six thousand three hundred and sixty six sat the exam.  This year’s average score is 61.65% which is a satisfactory pass.  Though there was improvement in all four subjects sat, grades in math still fall below the satisfactory level.  This year’s mean score for English is 60.5%, in Science is 64.67%, in Social Studies is 68.84%, and in Mathematics its 53.70%.  Compared to last year all four subjects saw an improvement; English saw the least improvement.  This year’s best performers in the P.S.E. are form the Belize and Cayo district.  With 388 points out of four hundred points, Shaneice Lord from Bernice York in Belize City is the top performer for this year.  Second best performer is Denesha Grant from Holy Redeemer who managed to obtain 381 points out of the 400 points.  Third best performer is Jacky Cheng hailing from Sacred Heart in the Cayo district with 377 points out of the 400.  The top performing students will be recognized at a national award ceremony later this month. The top three performers in each district will for the first time be recognized in brief ceremonies at the district level. The national top performer receives the Jane and Michael Nemhard award which includes a computer and financial assistance to the high school of their choice.  The P.S.E. assesses achievement of curriculum content and skills in the four areas of English, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science of the National Primary School Curriculum.  The Ministry of Education reminds that the P.S.E. is not and was never intended to be used as the sole criteria for entrance into secondary schools.  Secondary schools are advised to use multiple sources of evidence of students’ achievement and holistic development at primary schools to get a more complete picture of the students’ abilities, strengths and weaknesses in informing acceptance to and placement in high schools.
