August 14, 2008
An unfortunate incident at the Western Border yesterday morning has left a police sergeant with injuries. Police Sergeant Francisco Pott is on pre-retirement leave and was going across the border when he got involved in the incident. Acting Police Commissioner Allen Whyllie told us more about what happened.
ACP Allen Whyllie, Acting Police Commissioner
“Yesterday in the morning sometime after 8 I believe a person was detained by the police at Benque, he was search and several documents, Guatemalan documents were found on him and believed to be false. He attempted to bribe the police officer, the police officer refused and the man ran away. At that time, somewhere in the “No Man’s Land Area”, I believe it was a police sergeant who is on pre-retirement leave saw what had happened and he apprehended this person who was escaping and he brought him back to the Belize side. I understand that sometime there after the sergeant went across the border on some personal business and he was assaulted by some of taxi drivers and money changers. This required the Guatemalan police come to his aid he was over there for a while and then the information we had is that they wanted the Guatemalan to be released in order for him to be released. I gathered this was the request of some of the Guatemalan Taxi Drivers and money changers and as a result of that the person was released and the sergeant was released.”
We have been unable to confirm the extent of Sergeant Pott’s injuries.
