NATIONAL TRADE UNION CONGRESS HELD AGM OVER THE WEEKEND

The 42^nd Annual General Meeting of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize was held over the weekend in Punta Gorda. Paul Mahung has the details.

“During opening ceremony of Saturday morning the delegates were addressed by Guest Speaker the Minister of Human Development and Social Transformation, Peter Eden Martinez who congratulated the National Trade union Congress of Belize for its longevity and commended each member of the NTUCB who play an active role in keeping a movement that is truly one of the cornerstones of our democracy alive in Belize. Minister Martinez remarks that trade unions have played a vital role in the shaping of our nation’s history and in the formulation of out political and National identity. Minister Martinez says that he also hopes that the members of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize will work hand in hand with the Government of Belize to minimize the negative impact of global crisis and our own national issues including the sustainability of Social Security, the need for comprehensive health care coverage and the general improvement of workers working conditions. Other speakers included Mayor of PG Carlos Galvez and President’s report Rene Gomez. Along with working sessions focusing on constitution workshop and the National Trade Union Congress of Belize business session, a highlight of the AGM was the election of officers. Newly elected officers include President Dylan Reneau, First Vice President, Senator Paul Perriot, second Vice President Sean Nicholas, General Secretary Javier Roberts, assistant general secretary Lauralee Westby, Treasurer Arnold Zuniga, auditor Ian Ramirez, Trustees Dion Cacho and Laure Barrow, Women Affairs Director Ophelia Gomez, Councilor Cynthia Viagran and Education Director Ray Davis. The 47 delegates were representatives from the Belize Communications Workers Union, Belize Energy Workers Union, Belize National Teachers Union, Belize Workers Union, Christian Workers Union, Belize Water Services Union, Public Service Union and the Belize Progressive Teachers Union. The two day annual general meeting of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize held at the PG Bliss Multipurpose Building was held under the theme, NTUCB United to confront the challenges facing workers through social dialogue.”
